Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am writing this letter to introduce you to an initiative that we have undertaken on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. As Christians we all have a compassionate heart for those who are suffering. In today’s world it is apparent that the enemy is working to kill and destroy God’s most basic source for comfort and love, the family.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast has been through much in the last decade. Katrina, the oil spill, the economy has lead parents to seek relief from various sources. Some families have turned to the government. Some families have turned to relief organizations. Some families have turned off and become dysfunctional. Not finding the answers they are seeking many families have turned to methamphetamine production and use.  At Shofar Call Ministries we know that there is only one answer for hurting families and He is Jesus Christ.

Shofar Call Ministries has been serving families on the Mississippi Gulf Coast since February of 2008. We have served as house parents in a supported foster home and been part of the lives for more than 135 children and when appropriate, their families. God has worked wonders in the lives of our children and restored families in miraculous ways. Please visit our web sight to see some of our testimony. In October of 2010 the Gilead House opened. We are currently caring for a minimal number of children but are in the process of obtaining a larger facility to house more children.

But the answer to the crisis that exists on the Mississippi Gulf Coast requires more than one Christian foster home. It requires the entire Christian community. The Coast Orphan’s Ministry Initiative is a program that we are initiating to recruit Christian Foster parents. A typical foster family is ill prepared to face the challenges of caring for abused, neglected, abandoned and orphaned children. These children come into homes injured physically, emotionally and spiritually. Despite the best efforts of the state human services departments, they are under-resourced to provide the necessary support and prohibited from providing the one true answer, Jesus.

More than just recruit foster families, we can provide resources and answers on how to include Jesus in your care for the children without violating state prohibitions. We can be available to help you deal with the unforeseen and disturbing behavior of some of the children. We will provide the foster family with tools to succeed so that no child has to be turned away or given back. Additionally we will be recruiting respite care families to provide relief for foster parents that need a break. This part time foster care solution would be a blessing to families that have sacrificed 24/7 to caring for these little ones. 

When appropriate, we will minister to the birth families trusting that if they open their heart to Jesus that all things are possible. Family reunification is not always appropriate but it is a beautiful thing when God gets involved. We are overwhelmed by the need for Christian foster care on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. While other homes are closing and other ministries are moving away we are seeking to fill the gap.
